KOTA KINABALU: Twenty students from Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS) received the China Ambassador Scholarship 2026 at the 6th Chinese Bridge and China Ambassador Scholarship Award Ceremony held recently.
The awards were presented by Education Counsellor of the Embassy of the People’s Republic of China in Malaysia, Zhao Changtao, on behalf of Chinese Ambassador to Malaysia Ouyang Yujing.
In a speech read by Zhao, Ouyang said the scholarship reflected growing educational cooperation between Malaysia and China while promoting cultural exchange and people-to-people ties.
“The scholarship aims to encourage outstanding Malaysian students to excel academically and develop a global outlook,” he said.
The ceremony was held at the Gallery Hall, Chancellery Building, UMS.
Meanwhile, UMS vice-chancellor Kasim Mansor said the event symbolised strong bilateral ties between Malaysia and China.
In a speech delivered by deputy vice-chancellor (Academic and International) Rossita Shapawi, Kasim said the collaboration between UMS and the Chinese Embassy continued to create wider opportunities for students in academic development and cross-cultural engagement.
Among the recipients were Gayvin Rodell Lawkan, Tasha Latabu, Lim Yong Tuck, Phang Xin Yen and Vanessa Eve Balton.
The ceremony also featured the 6th Chinese Bridge Competition, highlighting Mandarin language and cultural proficiency among participants.
