KOTA KINABALU: A premises here was raided for allegedly carrying out illegal bitcoin mining activities.
The joint operation by the Energy Commission of Sabah (ECoS), Sabah Electricity (SE) and police seized nine bitcoin mining machines, along with cables, switchboards and other equipment allegedly used to illegally tap electricity from Sabah Electricity's power supply.
"The seized items are estimated to be worth RM100,000.
"Sabah Electricity estimates that unbilled electricity losses resulting from the illegal connection amount to approximately RM15,000 per month," ECoS said in a statement.
The case is being investigated under Sections 61(3) and 61(8) of the Electricity Supply Enactment 2024.
Under Section 61(3), offenders convicted of the offence can be fined between RM20,000 and RM1 million, jailed for up to five years, or both.
Meanwhile, Section 61(8) provides for a fine of up to RM50,000, a jail term of up to one year, or both
