LAHAD DATU, July 25: The Eastern Sabah Security Command (ESSCOM) has strengthened its commitment to human capital development through the launch of the MADANI Adopted School Programme 2026 and the Sabah-level Career Education, Innovation and STEM (KERINOV) Carnival 2026 at SMK Sepagaya.
The programme was launched by Sabah Assistant Education, Science, Technology and Innovation minister Jordan Jude Ellron at the Abdullah Munshi Open Hall of SMK Sepagaya.
The event also saw SMK Sepagaya selected as ESSCOM's MADANI Adopted School for this year, reflecting the agency's continued commitment to advancing the Whole-of-Government agenda and enhancing community well-being through strategic collaboration with educational institutions, in line with the aspirations of Malaysia MADANI and Sabah Maju Jaya 2.0.
ESSCOM chief executive officer Datuk Dr Jamaluddin Mohd Ali said the programme reflects ESSCOM's belief that national security depends not only on law enforcement and border control in the Eastern Sabah Security Zone (ESS Zone), but also on nurturing a knowledgeable, principled and resilient younger generation.
"Lasting peace is built not only through modern security assets, but through a society that is knowledgeable, possesses integrity, has a strong sense of identity and values the peace it enjoys," he was quoted in a statement.
He said ESSCOM would implement various initiatives with the school, including student leadership development, security education, civic awareness, preparedness for future challenges, volunteer programmes, social innovation and character-building.
Jamaluddin said the success of the MADANI Adopted School Programme should not be measured solely by the value of physical projects, but by the long-term relationship established between ESSCOM and the school community in producing a generation that values peace and takes responsibility for the nation's well-being.
For 2026, ESSCOM has been allocated RM100,000 to carry out two projects at SMK Sepagaya — the maintenance of the school's multipurpose court and the Abdullah Munshi Open Hall — to provide more comfortable and conducive facilities for learning, co-curricular activities and student development.
Meanwhile, Jordan said quality education requires the commitment and cooperation of all stakeholders, including security agencies, the private sector, communities and parents, to produce knowledgeable, competitive and future-ready students.
He said that in an era driven by artificial intelligence (AI), automation and the digital economy, the education system must produce a generation equipped not only with knowledge but also with critical, creative and innovative thinking, as well as technological skills to meet future demands.
The event was held in conjunction with the Sabah-level Career Education, Innovation and STEM (KERINOV) Carnival 2026, which brought together schools from across the state as a platform to foster innovation, strengthen STEM education and expose students to future career pathways.
SMK Sepagaya principal Shamsir Nureddin described the school's selection as ESSCOM's MADANI Adopted School as a new chapter in strengthening educational development in eastern Sabah.
He said the strategic collaboration would serve as a catalyst for implementing high-impact initiatives in academics, character development, leadership, security, innovation and student well-being.
The ESSCOM MADANI Adopted School Programme is expected to become a model of strategic collaboration between security agencies and educational institutions in producing knowledgeable, ethical, resilient and patriotic future generations for the well-being of society and the development of Sabah.
