KOTA KINABALU: Sabah has received a further extension of its Kinabalu Unesco Global Geopark (KUGGp) status, said Sabah Tourism, Culture and Environment Minister Datuk Jafry Ariffin.

When asked whether the construction of a High Altitude Training Centre on the mountain would affect Mount Kinabalu's Unesco status, he dismissed the possibility.

"No. (In fact) we received the green card just three months ago, which approved another four-year extension for Mount Kinabalu's status as part of the global heritage site," he told the media after launching the state-level World Environment Day celebration here.

The Kinabalu Unesco Global Geopark is a protected natural and geological site in north-western Sabah.

It was officially recognised by Unesco in 2023, making Sabah home to one of the world's few "Triple Crown" Unesco sites, with World Heritage, Biosphere Reserve and Global Geopark designations.

Meanwhile, Jafry said the High Altitude Training Centre would not involve extensive construction due to the difficulties of transporting materials up the mountain.

"It would not involve extensive construction or major infrastructure development on the mountain.

"Transporting materials up the mountain is challenging, so only small materials that can be carried up will be used. Therefore, the development will be kept to a minimum."

The ministry is also expected to release more information on the construction of the centre.
